Portability issues help to serve WoW doomcasters, or: "Time to move characters between accounts?"

"Bashing" World of Warcraft seems to be a new trend on the web. WoW is not "epic enough", it's not a real MMORPG, it lags, it's pay-to-play Diablo, too PVP-focused, easy, imbalanced, an endless grind, it's a pointless kids game... you may read these or similar opinions all over the place nowadays.
I don't mind the whiners, fact is that subscriptions are falling. This is where I want to discuss an important little feature some MMORPGs like Everquest 2 and Dark Age of Camelot (DAoC) already established: Moving chars between accounts.

Granted that the real life economy looks very bad since a couple of years already, it's a given that family members and even friends use the same copy of WoW to play online... After all, you don't want to buy 3 games for your interested family members and send $150 down the drain if it didn't come out as an enjoyable gaming experience for you all. I don't even want to start with the monthly fees here. This is a very realistic situation, personally I know many people who share WoW keys.
For the sake of simplicity, let's assume that they all play on the official Blizzard servers instead of the hacked private servers that are out there. They are different people (as in friends, family members), using different accounts and these might even be on physically different servers but they share the same copy of World of Warcraft and the same key. Blizzard makes it easy for them to handle different chars on one account.
Some day there comes the breaking point when you either uninstall the game and leave it to the main account holder (also known as the charity guy - "the one who pays the bills") because you found out it's not your type of game or want to continue to play it with your friends or family members.
As all characters are on the same account using the same key, you are out of luck. There is currently no way to keep your character to play with your friends. You either have to start from scratch again and ditch your elite mount for a shabby lvl1 priest who can't even heal or you try to persuade your friend to lose his character... 2 bad options after all.
So you can't transfer chars between different accounts, you can't play together with your friends so you just stop it and head over to eBay to sell the box.

From my understanding, it wouldn't even be hard to do. I bet it would take Blizzard half an hour to code this, all you'd have to do is take the char data and copy it over to another account holder. They could limit it to one move per char so it wont be abused. They could apply a limitation so it is only possible to transfer characters to new accounts with an unused, brand-new key. I also don't understand why they don't realize it, can't they see it is essential? They have access to all kinds of stats, they have to make this possible...

WoW may not be epic, but if I can play with people I know for years, I'm willing to forget about the epic part and just have some fun.

EGDL3 Week 3 Results

Extreme Games Draft League 3:


Some surprises this week. Chew Crew just managed to barely kill the Clown defense to win it in just under 2 hours. Mad Kiwi and IJOY (who is not to be found on the final scoreboard cause he lagged out) lagged through the Clown defense and made their last attack count while CCs defensive lineup held. In this shape, Chew Crew is a contender for this years EGDL throne.
Owninators, the proclaimed chokers of the season, finally won their first game vs. FuzzieBunnies who are now on the choke trip to hell themselves.
Koopa Troopas surprisingly won the game against the favourite of this league, Annihilate. Anni was aiming for a tie after 2 hours just to find out that there always is a 30 mins overtime attached to each season game (non-proclaimed rule) and lost it thanks to denk and King who both played great tennis. Anni was missing Lee but may now jump on the "Stacy is a jinx" bandwagon; of all EGDL teams, her team always came in last.
In the last game of this week, autopilot has to take yet another loss against the Scared? gang with tek (BUTTER) and DarkKnight25 coming back out of retirement and owning them up.

Curse Gaming - WoW Ultimate UI v9.2 Download

Of course you can take CTMod, Cosmos, the Nurfed UI or even go as far as downloading individual user interface add-ons from Curse-Gaming and spend hours to modify them to suit your needs. Or you could just install the WoW Ultimate UI which I found to be the best World of Warcraft UI by far.

The latest UUI download includes the following features:

All in One Inventory
- One big bag instead of 5 smaller bags.
AlphaMap
- Shows you the game map on the screen that has variable alpha and doesn't impair game control.
AltSelfCast
- Allows you to cast spells on yourself by simply holding alt and clicking the spell. The selfcast key (in this case "alt") can be changed.
AvailableOnly
- When you go to a trainer, it only shows you can can learn at the moment, so you don't have to unselect "Unavailable" every time.
AvgXP
- Calculates various xp based statistics, allowing you to know exactly how much xp and approximately how many kills til you level.
BankStatement
- Allows you to view the contents of your bank from anywhere in the world, even the bank statements from other characters on other servers.
BetterKeyBinding
- It's a better key binding interface!
Bufftimers
- Shows small timers under your buffs. Blizzard has a feature that can do this, but buff timers is better imo. Small, more compact, easier to read, always 4 digits.
ChatScroll
- Allows you to scroll the chat box with the mousewheel.
ChatTimeStamps
- Adds Chattimestamps to the chatframe.
CombatCaller
- Calls out you need health/mana whenever you are low on either, automatically.

Equip Compare
- Adds a comparison tooltip like that which you see at the AH when browsing items you are wearing, but with stuff in your inventory as well.

Flexbar
- A huge addon for creating ANY type of action bar. Hugely flexible. Words cannot describe the power this provides each user.
Gatherer
- Shows the locations of plants/mineral veins/chests on the minimap after you loot them once.
GoodInspect
- Allows you to inspect from a much greater distance, and also allows you to inspect members of the opposite faction. (You have to use a key binding for the latter part, simply right clicking there name will not bring up any options)
Gypsy_BuffBar
- Adds a moveable, detailed buffbar instead of the standard one.
Gypsy_General
- Adds various options such as tooltip placement, lagmeter display, etc.
Gypsy_Hotbar
- Removes all the artwork from the normal WoW action bar, adds an extra row of buttons, and makes it moveable.
Gypsy_Shell
- Creates a nice little Gypsy Menu for all the Gypsy addons.
Gypsy_Unitbars
- Makes the target frame/character frame/party frame moveable and adds various other anchoring options.
ItemBuff
- Allows you to see the buffs on your items without viewing your character.
Karma
- A player tracking system. Keey track of ninjas, or nice people, and rate them!
Lootlink
- An in-game, searchable item database with the caveat that it starts out empty. Items are added to it as you see them in game. You can scan the entire auction house by going to the auction house dude and typing "/lootlink scan" while the auction window is open.

- Allows you to add notes to the main map.

- Allows you to move many of the games frames around anywhere on the screen.

- A cool, easy-to-configure set of bars that can "pop up" when you mouseover them, hence "popbar".
